Video: What is Custom Thermoforming?

What is custom thermoforming? A thermoforming or vacuum forming design and manufacturning operation can produce plastic blisters, trays, clamshells, material handling and other plastic parts by using computer aided design software.

Plastics thermoforming is described by many industry terminologies: vacuum forming, pressure forming, and custom thermoforming; however, the basic plastic forming process remains the same: heat, vacuum, and pressure. Watch this custom thermoforming overview video from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers below.

Food Packaging Suppliers: What to Consider When Choosing Food Packaging Suppliers (Part 4 of 4)

This is the final installment in a four part series on food packaging suppliers. For part one, click here.

The evaluation of food packaging suppliers should begin with understanding the level of expertise you need for your particular application.  With a thorough understanding of your project requirements, you can determine which regulations apply to your project and begin to evaluate suppliers.

The following questions represent a good starting point for your selection process:

  • What specific regulations affect the materials you’ll be purchasing from the supplier?
  • What level of testing has the supplier performed on these materials?
  • What restrictions are associated with each material?
  • What back-up data can be presented for food safety and these prospective materials to be used in the packaging project?
  • What processes are in place to ensure quality?
  • Does the infrastructure house the most advanced manufacturing equipment?
  • What is the supplier’s experience level with projects of your type?
  • Has the supplier been in business for a long period and with a verifiable track record?

These questions represent a starting point when selecting food packaging suppliers.  Just as regulatory compliance is complex, so is the evaluation process; however, you need to be sure you get the best partner on-board to help ensure end user safety and the long-term viability of your brand.

Food Packaging Suppliers: What to Consider When Choosing Food Packaging Suppliers (Part 3 of 4)

This is part three in a four part series on food packaging suppliers. For part one, click here.

Food packaging suppliers must be well versed in regulatory requirements to protect the public.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has compiled extensive regulations to which all food packaging suppliers must adhere.  Suppliers must also balance end user protection with safeguarding a product’s branding.

Evaluating Food Packaging Suppliers

A competent food packaging supplier must still have an understanding of regulation to best evaluate a supplier’s regulatory expertise, analytical capabilities, testing procedures, quality measures and more.

To begin a successful partnership, companies must know what questions to ask of potential food packaging suppliers.  Safe food packaging, satisfied consumers and continual brand loyalty depend on selecting the best supplier.

Qualified food packaging suppliers will make understanding FDA regulations a top priority.  This commitment is necessary given regulatory complexity.  High performance requires significant financial investment as well.  The supplier must have the appropriate packaging equipment and infrastructure to best meet requirements.

In part four we will continue to discuss how to evaluate food packaging suppliers. For more information on food packaging suppliers, contact Flexpak Corp or continue reading our blog.

Food Packaging Suppliers: What to Consider When Choosing Food Packaging Suppliers (Part 2 of 4)

This is part two of a four part series. You can read part one here.

Food packaging suppliers must be well versed in regulatory requirements to protect the public.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has compiled extensive regulations to which all food packaging suppliers must adhere.  Suppliers must also balance end user protection with safeguarding a product’s branding.

How Do Food Packaging Suppliers Understand Regulation?

The sheer volume and complexity of food packaging regulations is daunting to even the experienced supplier.  However challenging, the supplier must understand current regulations thoroughly, and keep up with new all new and revised governmental regulations.

An experienced food packaging supplier can help businesses understand regulations and provide safe, compliant solutions.  Relying on a well qualified partner with a proven track record can ease the burden of regulatory compliance.

The key to a successful supplier relationship is finding a supplier with the regulatory expertise and experience you can trust. Companies are taxed with tight schedules, competitive pressures, financial constraints and more.  By outsourcing to a packaging supplier, businesses can focus on these core issues and not get bogged down with the regulatory minutiae.

Food Packaging Suppliers: What to Consider When Choosing Food Packaging Suppliers (Part 1 of 4)

When you select a food packaging supplier, you must evaluate the company’s competencies and experience based on strict criteria. Food packaging suppliers must be well versed in regulatory requirements to protect the public.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has compiled extensive regulations to which all food packaging suppliers must adhere.  Suppliers must also balance end user protection with safeguarding a product’s branding.

FDA’s complex and extensive regulations ensure the safety of the food the public consumes. Understanding governmental food packaging regulations help prevent costly lawsuits and potentially damaging media inquiries.

There are many serious consequences of falling short of regulatory compliance. First, people can be injured.  Then, the company can lose the confidence of its customers, suffer bad press and have its brand harmed to a point it may never recover.

In part two of this series on food packaging suppliers, we will look at how to properly evaluate a food packaging supplier. For more information, contact Flexpak today.

Packaging Design Companies: Things to Consider When Comparing Packaging Design Companies (Part 3 of 3)

This is the final part of a three part series. Click here to read part one.

Evaluating packaging design companies means more than finding the supplier with the lowest price.  Several qualifications come into play when you make this important selection.  It’s important to take the time necessary to make sure your supplier can deliver even the most demanding packaging project to the highest standards. You must evaluate many crucial criteria when hiring package design companies, including the following:

Communication and Customer Service Processes.  Solid communication is important to any project’s success.  Does your prospective vendor have workable processes in place?

Do they seem genuinely vested in your satisfaction during every step of the project?  Does the supplier have a good track record with its customers and can you confirm performance levels through customer references?

Are the project approach and internal processes well defined, established and easy to understand?  Well qualified packaging design companies will thoroughly analyze all aspects of your project, from design and manufacturing to presentation and delivery in the marketplace. The company should be able to electronically transmit designs that can be viewed through generic, free software viewers (ie: Adobe Acrobat, e-Viewer, etc.) without you purchasing costly, vendor specific design software.

Finally, make sure you have ample opportunities to provide input and feedback.  Milestones should be established throughout the project to solicit your participation.  These developmental milestones can include, at a minimum, an initial customer conference, virtual design concept, prototype form, production molding and part approval.

Packaging design companies meeting the above criteria make good candidates for further consideration.  The best partnerships not only deliver your packaging project on-time, within budget and to your exact quality specifications, but also lay the groundwork for a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.

Packaging Design Companies: Things to Consider When Comparing Packaging Design Companies (Part 2 of 3)

This is part two of a three part series.

Audited Systems and Procedures.  A registered ISO 9001 manufacturing facility means the supplier has achieved a level of manufacturing capability that is confirmed by outside sources.

Financial Stability.  You should look for packaging design companies that have been in business several years.  This longevity often equates to greater financial viability in terms of purchasing power.

You want to be sure your packaging supplier has sufficient capital or credit to purchase the necessary raw materials for your projector your project could be delayed.

Customization.  You want your solution tailored to your specific requirements not a “one-size-fits-all” solution.  Your products are unique so your packaging should conform to any special design features.

Delivery Ability.  Your supplier should be able to demonstrate how they can deliver your packaging project as required, especially if you have a time-sensitive deadline. Request a major milestone schedule that complies with your forecasts and demand requirements.

Adequate Facilities.  You can learn much about a supplier by visiting the facilities.

For example, site appearances often relate to the job you can expect on your product and tooling.  Evaluate the cleanliness and environment of each building.   Inspect the manufacturing equipment.  Poorly maintained equipment could pose some concern for your end product’s quality.

Evaluate package design companies from a technology standpoint.  Does the firm use the latest computer technologies?  Suppliers should be able to demonstrate how they advance in-house capabilities and skills on a continual basis.

In Part 3 of this series we will continue to look at what you should consider when comparing packaging design companies. For more information on packaging design, contact Flexpak today!

Packaging Design Companies: Things to Consider When Comparing Packaging Design Companies (Part 1 of 3)

Evaluating packaging design companies means more than finding the supplier with the lowest price.  Several qualifications come into play when you make this important selection.  It’s important to take the time necessary to make sure your supplier can deliver even the most demanding packaging project to the highest standards.

Since vendor performance can cause your packaging project to succeed or fail, you can’t afford to select the wrong partner.  You must evaluate many crucial criteria when hiring package design companies, including the following:

Full-Service.  You may want to consider packaging design companies that can design, prototype, produce, assemble and package your product.  Even if you don’t need all these capabilities, the supplier will likely have greater knowledge from doing all these functions.  And, you want to have the choice to use any of these services in the future.

With vertically-integrated capabilities, packaging design companies can produce designs, prototypes and tooling in-house.  This functionality allows you greater control over the end result and can improve delivery time.

In Part 2 of this series we will continue to look at what you should consider when comparing packaging design companies. For more information on packaging design, contact Flexpak today!

Packaging Design Company, Flexpak Corporation, Walks to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

On Saturday, October 29, 2011, packaging design company, Flexpak Corporation, had a team of over 20 walkers raise more than $1,100 through their participation in the 19th annual American Cancer Society’s, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona. This year’s three-mile walk, attended by the largest turnout in history with over 11,000 people raised an astounding $700,000! The Pink Walk was a celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope, and a shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love.

“Flexpak has had a team of walkers the last 8 years,” said Wanda Guerra, Director of Finance and Flexpak team leader. “We had participation from every Flexpak department. What a great way to spend a Saturday with great weather, friends, exercise and all for a great cause! We give a special thanks to our team members who walked and to all who donated.”

Flexpak Corporation is proud to be a member of the Phoenix Valley contributing organizations that matched our individual Flexpak employee donations and proud to be a part of the American Cancer Society. More than a walk, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a powerful and inspiring event that unites communities to celebrate people who have battled cancer, raise awareness about the steps we can take to help prevent the disease, and raise money to find cures and support programs and services for those facing the disease.

The Flexpak Team’s fundraising support enables the American Cancer Society to save lives by:

  • Helping people stay well by educating and empowering women to live healthy lives and reduce their risk for breast cancer, and to get screening tests such as mammograms to find breast cancer early, when it is easiest to treat
  • Helping people facing breast cancer get well by providing information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of their breast cancer experience
  • Finding cures by investing in and conducting research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries into breast cancer’s causes and cures
  • Fighting back by working with legislators to support laws that help fight breast cancer and help all women get access to screenings and care

In 2010, more than 800,000 walkers across the country joined the American Cancer Society in our united fight against breast cancer. Together, we raised more than $60 million through Making Strides events – and we did it one donation at a time.
